he
crime rate is soaring and UK prisons are at bursting point. Some
70,000 inmates are currently residing at Her Majesty's pleasure
and it's costing the taxpayer around £24,000 per head, per
year to keep them there.
hat's
more, the re-offence rate within the first two years is a staggering
80% for young offenders and 54% for those over 21.
n a desperate
bid to handle the crisis, the Government is focussing heavily on
rehabilitation especially for young offenders. But that's a long-term
answer to a short-term crisis, so they're also spending vast sums
of taxpayers' money on building more prisons, to contain even more
prisoners, who will go on to re-offend and swell the prison population
even more! It's a never-ending circle and there appears no obvious
way to break it.
