Am I a Twit to Tweet?

Does anyone really understand what’s going on at Twitter? If so I would welcome some enlightenment. I have been perusing my email confirmations of followers and direct messages and I just can’t seem to make sense of it. Is that resounding laughter I hear echoing over the hills and valleys at the ridiculousness of my confusion?
It appears that most, if not all of my followers are like me, just using Twitter to promote their wares. I think the term “social networking” has to be taken with a liberal pinch of salt because all I can see promotions for so far are soft and hard porn sites, seo businesses, making money online and dating agencies.
Is it me? Am I missing something vital? Are my own tweets reaching anybody? Or are they just part of the ever scrolling malaise?
Any comments on this subject would be most welcome…
